Gal Gadot Was Not Funny on Snl

SNL Season 43, Gal Gadot Review: Thank God for the Weekend Update

Gal Gadot hosted SNL this weekend, but could she save the day or was this another slow start for the show?

Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot stopped by Saturday Night Live this weekend, and fans hoping for a bounce back will have to wait another week. Expectations for SNL are sky high after an Emmy-winning season last year that leaned hard into the anti-Trump narrative.

So far this season the show has been light on the Trump trolling, with only one skit (last weekend's cold open) being directed at him. Also not helping matters is the fact that the show is usually slow out of the gate to start the year anyways, and not ever Gal Gadot could use her Wonder Woman magic to save the day.

If you watched the episode and at times forgot who the host was, you're not alone. Despite being in skits about O.J. Simpson and a Maury-type talk show, it felt like Gadot wasn't seen as much as we'd have liked.

That didn't mean everything was bad. Here's all that you need to know for the SNL water cooler this week:

SNL Rundown…

1.In lieu of a politically charged cold open, as the show is wont to do, we instead saw something different. Country music star Jason Aldean, who was on stage when the Las Vegas shooting massacre occurred, gave a powerful tribute to the victims and to the American spirit. He used the late Tom Petty's 'Won't Back Down' as the song, making this one of the most powerful tributes we've ever seen on SNL.

2.Much like last week's monologue, Gal Gadot's set wasn't all that inspiring. Leslie Jones got to fan out about Wonder Woman, and as is the case with Jones she saved things with her charisma.

3.Last week Pizza Hut was the subject of the first "paid advertising sketch", and I hoped for something better. This week, Safelite Repair paid to sponsor a sketch which involved Beck Bennett playing a window shelf repairman who was purposefully breaking the window of a high schooler so that he could hit on her. It felt like SNL pushing back against the idea of a paid skit by giving out an ol' Stink Palm.

4.Not all the skits were golden. A sketch about desert mirages and mice that make Cinderella's dress fell a bit flat. SNL likes to get weird, but these just didn't have the same muster as a Kevin Roberts, David S. Pumpkins, or Space Pants. We didn't get any awkward Kyle Mooney bits either, which are usually spot-on with the alt-comedy that SNL uses way too sporadically.

5.The Weekend Update is starting to peak as the best thing about the show, much in the same way the cold opens of last season. The chemistry between Colin Jost and Michael Che was so good the Update earned a summer spinoff and that seems to have allowed the duo to sharpen their skills to the finest degree.

6.Che, specifically is on fire. After going viral last weekend, he came off the top rope with a hilarious and piercing rant about gun control in America.

7.Jost got in on the trolling too, saying Trump is a horrible President but could make a damn fine mascot.

8.Kate McKinnon took just two episodes to reprise her Emmy-winning role as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It's the second week she's been a part of things at the Update desk, and seeing more of her there wouldn't be the worst thing.

9.Perhaps the rawest moment of the episode, aside from the Jason Aldean opener, was Pete Davidson tackling depression and mental illness. The actor was recently diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and used his unique brand of comedy to clap back at the stigma that being mentally ill means you're somehow a bad person. It was honest, hilarious, and hopefully, Davidson's plea for more airtime works.

10.One of the best sketches of the night involved Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant playing lesbians who somehow happened upon Themyscira, the homeworld of Diana Prince and her Amazonian warrior sisters. McKinnon was mint, as she usually is, and will surely go viral for making out with Gal Gadot in the skit. It served as another early season highlight for perhaps SNL's best cast member.

Verdict

Gadot's enthusiasm helped keep this episode from being as low as it could have been, as it hasn't been the strongest start to the season thus far for SNL. That being said, the Weekend Update remains the best part of the show, and there were enough moments that had you laughing to salvage things. It wasn't great but if this is as bad as it gets then we're in for a really solid season.
